New Brunswick Scene Report

by Jeremy Sherriff
This is what's going down in New Brunswick for February.

Well I will start out with my home city Saint John. Not a lot has changed. Still lots of snow here and there - pretty much everywhere so ya really can't bike anywhere without getting a wet ass or a really salty bike. But there are a few pretty clear parking lots that you can ride. Ya, I know, parking lots aren't really that cool to ride but when you've been inside for 2 months just looking at your bike and staring at the snow to make it melt faster, hell any riding is good riding.

Early Season Report

By: Eric Goss

Bike racing season is upon us once again and I for one am pretty damned excited about that. This past winter saw a bit of a lifestyle change for me as I returned to Fredericton, New Brunswick to continue studying towards my Mechanical Engineering undergrad degree. Having lived in North Vancouver for the three previous years where you can ride mountain bikes 365 days a year, seeing the mercury drop to minus thirty for extended periods at a time got me a little worried if I was going to be ready for go time this season.

Spring Fever!

It looks like we're turning the corner and have survived yet another nasty-ass east coast winter.

It's time to start seriously thinking about what 2004 is going to bring the scene in Nova Scotia. It looks like some very positive developments are on thier way for Mountain Biking on the trails and urban landscapes of Canada's Ocean Playground.

Finally Spring is Here - New Brunswick Scene Report #3

With the credits of Manifesto rolling by, Canada flag flapping on the screen, I begin my article. If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, I highly suggest going out and buying or borrowing it. For me it was and is the most influential biking video ever.

And just when the trails were getting nice and crusty...

It looks like this week's snowfall has all but dashed any hopes of getting those choice winter rides in, but hey prove me wrong.

The off season is proving to be pretty busy for a few folks in the 902.

The off-season... don't ya just love it? Well, no. And who can blame you? What a miserable time of year: great gobs of snow plummeting out of the sky, sticking to everything in sight and piling up on the single-track; frigid temperatures and dark, dark, dark. And as if that wasn't enough, you have to work on your abs all the time, for Gawd's sake.

I've done some desperate things in my time in the name of winter. Snow biking is obvious. I've jittered over snowmobile tracks for miles on end and shovelled Larry's Trail so we could do a three-kilometre loop over and over and over. This year the wet snow killed the shovelling. This is how Larry and I found ourselves marching over the trail in snowshoes recently one sunny day.

How did you ring in the New Year?

As with many cyclists across the region, I took part in a New Years Day group ride that had most of the pain happening before the ride as several riders had trouble stuffing their extra large, hung-over melons into helmets.

Beats the hell out of a Polar Bear Dip!

Tip-to-tip race set for PEI

As races go, Prince Edward Island's "Confederation Trail Open" isn't likely to knock the TransRockies off the calendar; however, the first annual three-day stage event should attract its fair share of pro riders eager to grab the rumoured-to-be generous purse. And recreational cyclists should love the challenge of covering 300 kilometres of off-road terrain in three days.

There's Biking in Saint John?

Author: Mike Lawrence

With Rage Against the Machine playing, I nod my head as the songs from "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium" go on. Biking for me started when I was young. For as long as I can remember, I've had a bike. Nothing fancy, just something to ride on trails, or to school. I wish I had gotten into biking more seriously at a younger age.

Let it snow...let it snow...

As I write, the first real storm of the season is blasting into PEI, dumping a ton of snow over the trails. That's it for biking this year, right?

Wrong.

It just means it's time to snow shovel.
