Time to get Gore(y)!
By O9Man
Endurance mountain bike races or events have been all the craze locally. They are the events bringing in the numbers, they are the events that bring new people into the sport but most of all they are the events that seem to produce the most fun!
Next one up? The one, the only, the original... Gore Fest 2008.

Across the Highlands MTB Challenge '07
Press Release

Yes, that's right, another series of road and mountain bike rides is in the works for the Baddeck area for the third weekend of August 2007. The volunteers, who had a hell of a good time last year, unaminously agreed to do it again.
What the 2007 Edition will be like? First, the headquarters are moving to Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground, 8 km west of Baddeck. This is a much quieter site way off TCH # 5, with a heated pool, groceries, camping supplies, a licensed restaurant. There is a special "per person" group camping rate for AHC'07 participants; there are also cabins for rental. Just in case riders are afraid they won't get enough exercise, there are canoes for rental on site too. See for yourself at: www.baddeckcabottrailcampground.com
Apart from the MTB rides of the weekend, road rides will be scheduled for the participants and/or their supporters should they wish to do road riding instead. The course of Saturday's Challenge Across the Highlands will be quite similar to last year's but with more great surprises at every corner. The five Pit Stops will again be fully provisioned with healthy food and entertainment. A larger crew of support vehicles will ensure everyone immediate assistance in case of physical or mechanical failure.

ECMTB's Woolastook 5
By O9man
Sunday June 3rd couldn't have been a better day for five plus hours of riding in Woolastook Park, NB. Well, I guess that isn't quite true, cheeky beavers managed to chew through water and power lines to the clubhouse so we were left without electricity and running water. But that was a small price to pay for such a perfect day weather-wise. Thirty-six racers turned up from varying backgrounds to take part in East Coast Mountain Biking's Woolastook 5. The mix of riders included pros, elite racers, amateur racers and even a few first time racers.

24 Hours of Summer Solstice
By O9Man
The summer solstice is one of two dates when the sun is farthest away from the earth. This year it happens on June 21st. Ask Adam Ruppel, however, and he'll tell you different. Adam is the President of Chico Racing, and on the following weekend of June 23rd/24th he and his crew will redefine the summer solstice as a 24 hour mountain bike festival and race in Bolton, Ontario. This will be the 10th 24 Hour Summer Solstice, and I was able to get in touch with Adam to ask him a few questions about the event. I also registered for the 24 hour solo race.

Whopper Drop Clean Up Day
Sunday, Sept. 18th we will join forces to clean up one of our favourite local trail systems, Whopper Drop.
As you may be aware, the East Coast Mountain Bike Association is working to protect this valuable resource and turn it into a mountain bike park. Our long term goal is to keep this trail system clean and natural - come help us launch our effort.
Bring work gloves, hammers, snacks, water, sensible hiking shoes, friends and a desire to give'er. With enough people we can accomplish three things: remove trash from the trails, including old disintegrating bridges; fix the current functional bridges that might be missing rungs; and clean up the parking adjacent to Whopper.
If you ride Whopper this is your chance to help maintain it. Please give back to the trails that you use - support our clean up day by helping out.
Meet in the Whopper parking lot (behind Burger King in Bayer's Lake Industrial Park) at 10 am, Sunday Sept. 18th. We're counting on you to make this happen!

The course was very similar to the nationals with the addition of one insanely technical descent and short steep climb. I had a great start, and went into the singletrack somewhere in the 20s, and 2nd Canadian espoir.

Donald Dumas and Chris Day from the Xtreme Bike Shop never fail to organize and host only the most exciting of events. And this past weekend was certainly on par.

Organized by Jose Bray from Joe Mamma Urban Cycles, it was the second time that Freuban hit the streets of Ottawa; the first one held a bit over a year ago.
This time around, Freuban was going to be bigger and better, and held at the newly opened Ottawa Sk8 Park. New this year to the event was the addition of the BMX discipline, and with a big cash bursary and tonnes of prizes to win, Freuban attracted many top riders from across Ontario, Quebec and even riders as far as Prince Edward Island.

Bike Night at Pitchman's Pub
Come out, watch some great biking movies and help aid the fight for a new skatepark. the Halifax Skatepark Coalition is in need of funding so here is a perfect chance to support the cause and watch some brand new biking videos. JIB2 is the newest and also the last movie that Thor Wixom will ever create and along with JIB2 is Ride BMX's Drop the Hammer. JIB2 has a bunch of unknown local riders, from around the areas which Thor filmed, who tear up the street/park and the Movie Drop the Hammer is unbelievable from what I hear and read.

At the start of the season going to Worlds wasn't really a goal of mine. The layout of the selection criteria make it pretty much impossible to try specifically to "make the team". For example, it's hard to say, "OK, let's be the top Canadian at a North American World Cup", or, "Let's win Nationals". No shit! That's always the plan. So for this season I just shut up and rode my bike - lots. Fast sometimes, fortunately some of those times were when it counted, not so fast other times. Most importantly I had the funnest summer I think I've ever had in my life.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is that I was on the start list for World Championships and was pretty happy about it. This year's Worlds were held in Les Gets, France. Les Gets is about an hour drive from Geneva, Switzerland in the Alps. By the way, the Alps make the Rockies look like rolling hills. Not the scale, but by how jagged the peaks are. Pretty wild.

Sportwheels 2nd Annual Bmx/Mtb Competition
![]()
The Sportwheels BMX/MTB club will be hosting their second annual competition, with a few tweaks from last year. First of all, it won't be a comp per say, it's going to be a GIANT jam. Meaning, everyone rides, whenever they feel like riding. If we notice some punk is hogging the ramps, we'll tell him to eat a hot dog or something.
Various random prizes will be given throughout the day. There are also lots of prizes for such mini competitions as long jump, best trick, highest bunny hop and whatever else the kids can think up.
Date: Sunday, October 31st, 2004
Time: Noon - when the kids get tired
Cost: $10
All proceeds will be donated to the Halifax Skate Park Coalition.

Westward, Ho...

Physically, mentally and financially Nationals is pretty much the mid point of the season. I guess chronologically it is, as well. So, after returning home from Ste. Anne and counting how many pennies were in the piggy bank I started gearing up for what is sure to be an awesome part of the summer. Heading out west. The weekend right after Nationals I loaded up with Hadley and went down to Wentworth, NS to take in a third Atlantic series DH race. My Giant Team DH was laid up in the shop after the beating I laid on it in Quebec so I was sporting my AC bike for this one.

After the World Cup at Ste. Anne I opted to stay in the Maritimes and rest up a bit before the big trip out west, and more importantly Nationals. Just couldn't justify a trip out to the World Cup at Calgary when there were a couple cool events lined up here at home.

In the Eye of the Holder - End of Competition Review
Author: Jason Carroll
![]()
The original date for the competition was set for June 26th The morning started off with me taking all the people that stayed at my house (8 people from Prince Edward Island) out for breakfast. While eating breakfast at the local farmers market, my cell phone was ringing off the hook - people who thought that competition would be cancelled for sure as it was raining where they were calling from. The only thing I could tell people was, "It's really nice here in Miramichi." So the comp was a go. Went to the bike shop, met a few riders that had traveled in from other provinces also. Then headed off to the park where all my friends would ride and warm up for the comp as I set up the Norco tent and got things prepped for the evening. Still my phone was ringing constantly.

Mont Ste. Anne World Cup
Correspondence from Jamie Lamb
My racing season has been going pretty well since I got back from the US, here are some accounts of my races most notably the Mont Saint Anne World Cup I did last Sunday.
I had never done a World Cup race before, the biggest race I'd ever done being the Junior Worlds last year. So I didn't know exactly what to expect, I knew the pace would be hard, and the start brutal. My goals were to finish the race without getting pulled, and to finish in the top 60.

A more picturesque road race in Nova Scotia would have been impossible as 87 racers gathered at the Riverport coast to test their legs and tactical savvy on the mostly flat-to-rolling 28km course.

Billed by organizers The Montagnard Cycling Club as the Atlantic Road Cycling Chamionships for 2004, the Tour de Restigouche offered up some hot and hilly racing in northern NB last weekend. Located in Campbellton, this 3 stage race offers something for all cyclists, whether they be TT specialists, featherweight climbers or crit monsters. Combining this great racing with a mixture of Acadian hospitality, incredible scenery and excellent weather meant that racers and fans went home Sunday night with both smiles and resolutions to attend the following year.

Sea Level Cycling Lobster Crawl
Author:Terry Tomlin
June 6th saw the second annual Sea Level Cycling Lobster Crawl take over the lovely town of Yarmouth, NS to the delight of both spectators and racers. Although the lobsters may have been crawling, the 65+ racers in attendance certainly weren't! Racing in all categories was hard fought and when the timing clocks finally came to rest everyone agreed that worthy provincial champions had been crowned in all categories. As an added bonus to the prestige of being Provincial Champion, winners were awarded ultra-chic custom Provincial Champions jerseys to wear for the next 12 months! This fact alone set many young hearts racing long before the starting gun was ever fired.

Hub Cycle Victoria's Secret NS MTB #1 Race Report

Though the skies were cloudy and the course had sheen to it, the mood at the first XC mountain bike race of the season was anything but damp. The 104-person field was diverse as the fastest racers from NS, NB, and PEI gathered in Truro's beautiful Victoria Park to test their legs, lungs, and handling skills on this year's newly designed course. Bruce and Daisy Roberts have been putting on top events for over 10 years and this was no exception.

Cyclesmith Big Tide, Big Ring Race Report
Author: Streetgang
May 9th saw the 9th annual Cyclesmith road race kick off the Nova Scotia season in scenic Brooklyn. If we rewind back to the 2003 version of this race, racers will remember (many would like to forget!) that the race was accompanied by temps of +2 C, strong winds and horizontal rain and sleet. Well, what a difference a year makes! For 2004 the 60+ riders were greeted by sunny skies and mid-teen temps but the strong winds remained - hey, two outta three ain't bad!

The King's County Classic Road Race: Battle Royale in Cow Country
Author:Streetgang
May 2nd saw the first official road race of the maritime season take place in beautiful Belleisle Creek, NB. For 2004, organizers Brad Fulton and Andrew McNair moved the race from its previous location in Penobsquis and the new 17km course consisting of rolling rural terrain proved to be a much tougher choice for many than the course of previous years. Minimal traffic, decent pavement and a fine venue for registration showed that their new course location was a wise decision.

8th Annual Wolfville - Roubaix
Author: Streetgang
![]()
An excited field of 48 riders turned up at the start in Port Williams for what has become somewhat of a season opener for many cyclists in Nova Scotia. The 8th Annual Wolfville - Roubaix event has seldom been run under sunnier skies or with more favourable winds. For those not familiar with the event the format is as follows: the riders begin en masse and ride a very casual 30km as a group on a mixture of pavement and dirt road. After a brief stop to remove jackets, grab a bite to eat and attend to an excess of early morning coffee the ride re-starts and the reins are released, with riders forging ahead at their own pace for the next 60km. The dual format has contributed to the popularity of the ride by offering something for everyone - as if the stunning views of the South Mtn. and the Annapolis Valley in the spring aren't enough!
