Interested in Saving Mountain Bike Trails in HRM? Read on!
Many of the trails we ride and love in the immediate HRM vicinity are scheduled to fall victim to commercial and housing development. Whopper, Burnside, Fight Trail and others are already headed for the chopping block. It will only be a matter of time before this prime real estate is completely butchered and we are left without local trail systems worth riding. In addition, as the trail options lessen, traffic on the remaining trails will increase and conflicts between the various user groups are bound to become more of a problem.
It is in our best interest to take a proactive approach to this issue in hopes of ensuring that 10 years down the road there will still be worthy offroad mountain bike recreation areas within easy riding distance of the city core.
This Monday night, May 30th at 7:30 pm I'm encouraging everyone to come to an informal brainstorming session at the Old Port in Burnside. The objective of this meeting will be to discuss parcels of land that would meet our needs, the idea of using (or initiating the declaration of) parklands for this purpose, the possibility of fundraising to buy land or support such a project and anything else that seems relevant.
If you intend to come to this meeting or need more information please email Bikergrl@ecmtb.com. Watch this space for further details. If it becomes apparent that a large number of people are interested in attending we may have to find a bigger meeting space.
