The Kieran Way
At a memorial bicycle ride and potluck supper centred at the White Rock Community Hall on Saturday, 11th December 2004, the Friends of Kieran O'Malley announced the established of 'The Kieran Way' foundation. While over forty riders took part in the bicycle ride on a wet and foggy Saturday afternoon, many more attended the potluck in the community hall. Several of Kieran's friends provided music.
The 'The Kieran Way' foundation is dedicated to the promotion of the health, environmental and recreational benefits of an active lifestyle and sustainable bicycle transportation. As those who knew Kieran will fully appreciate, this was Kieran's life and lifestyle. The foundation's vision is to establish a network of safe bicycle transportation and recreational pathways that encourage active lifestyles while at the same time reducing our dependence on motor vehicles.
The foundation's first objective is to establish a safe and convenient bicycle transportation way from Wolfville to Port Williams. This will encourage residents and tourists alike to take advantage of a broad range of cycling and active living opportunities. Over time, the foundation will promote other bikeways in the region.
The kick-off fund raising event is a dance and auction that is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 15, 2005 at the Wolfville Lions Hall. Music is to be provided by the ever popular 'Men Will Be Boys' band. Tickets are on sale for $10:00 each either from Acadia's School of Recreation Management and kinesiology (SRMK) office, 550 Main Street, Wolfville or the Valley Stove and Cycle Centre, 360 Main Street, Suite 20 (near Tim Horton's) in Wolfville.
A number of Kieran's friends are providing several valuable silent and live auction items. The silent auction will include water colours, prints, graphic designs, pottery and other hand crafts including a custom made hardwood canoe paddle. Other items include guitar lessons, a family kayak day, and an advanced physiological assessment. You may find out more about these items and register your bid by visiting the Coffee Merchant, 472 Main Street and the Valley Stove and Cycle Centre. The displays will appear before New Years Eve. Bidding for some silent auction items will conclude at the dance on January 15 while bidding for other items will extend to a special Coffee Merchant event to be announced later.
