Nova Scotia Scene Report
How did you ring in the New Year?
As with many cyclists across the region, I took part in a New Years Day group ride that had most of the pain happening before the ride as several riders had trouble stuffing their extra large, hung-over melons into helmets.
Beats the hell out of a Polar Bear Dip!
Whopper Dropper was fast and frozen and my resolution to be as fast as I was when I was 25 quickly went the way of the U-brake.
New Year's resolutions, like hardtail frames were made to be broken and I found myself once again overseeing goings-on at the back of the ride. Read: dropped.
But a New Year offers a chance to start all over again and face new challenges, try new things and bring new people into the sport we all love so much.
So what can we expect in 2004?
Well like the candy bar wrapper says, "bigger and better". In-depth discussions with those in the know (translation, hanging out at the bike shop), indicate that the 2 double "O" 4 is going to be extra fun for those who like it dirty. We're talking Mtn. Biking here, not Christina Aguilera.
Plans for the 2004 racing season are coming along well, dates are firming up and we can expect BNS to have a full slate of races posted in the months ahead.
Like to go downhill?
Like to go downhill fast?
Good news!
Cyclesmith is ready to field a DH team for a wide slate of races this coming race season. It's also looking like more Downhill races will be scheduled this season. As well, the return of Club Cyclesmith is nigh! That means group rides and all kinds of other hella-cool stuff.
If you're into epic rides and gruelling adventure you're in luck, Raid Gaspereau will return for 2004, start that LSD training now, you're going to need lots of slow twitch muscle fibre. The tentative date is looking like the 2nd weekend in July. Aahh, July...
But until those warm weather days are a long ways away, what to do ‘till then? Endless hours on the windtrainer? Seven days a week at the gym? Snowboarding? Snowshoeing? Yoga? Pilates? Beer and hockey? Thought so. Luckily lycra does allow for that winter layer of uh, warmth. There are still the hardcore around here that continue to ride 12 months of the year. At day, at night. We should all learn from their example and suck up the cold and get out there on the bike!
I'll be back next month, Febuary, the month of love, so PM me with ways we can show our bikes just how much we love them.
Oh yeah, my resolution for 2004? To turn at least one person on to cycling.
Have a good 2004, and give 'er ‘till she shivers!
Peace,
Nelly
