Time to get Gore(y)!
By O9Man
Endurance mountain bike races or events have been all the craze locally. They are the events bringing in the numbers, they are the events that bring new people into the sport but most of all they are the events that seem to produce the most fun!
Next one up? The one, the only, the original... Gore Fest 2008.

Welcome FITWORKS!
FITWORKS is the newest bike shop in Moncton, and they're also the newest member of the ECMTB team. Rheal Jaillet of FITWORKS Moncton was eager to jump into the local mountain biking scene earlier this year, and generously donated some great prizes to ECMTB for the Woolastook 5. FITWORKS was good to us, and we knew we could be good to them by working with them for the year online. East Coast Mountain Biking is still developing itself all over New Brunswick, and this is a big step towards making both ECMTB and FITWORKS regular names on Moncton trails.

What's Their Secret?
![]()
The Woolastook 5 in Fredericton (NB) and The Links Summer Solstice in The Valley (NS) both saw a dominant performance in the Open Men's category with Cyclesmith sweeping the podium in both races. What's more, in the Valley, Cyclesmith racers were responsible for the top six finishers in that category. Not to be out done by the men, Cyclesmith has also seen the podium in the women's category.
How are they doing this? East Coast Mountain Biking Wants to know! Join us in the 'Whats New on ECMTB' Forum this Sunday June 29th a 8:00 p.m. where the Cyclesmith crew will answer our questions on "how they do it."

In the Wake of the AMP
By O9Man
On May 4th 2008 the AMP SuperCrit, the first road race of the BNS road series, was supposed to be held in Shubenacadie. The race was cancelled in a fog of controversy. I had hoped to wrangle Andrew "Cyclesmith" Feenstra, the race host, into a quick and heated interview that would cause a commotion in the community like no other. After all, what gets more attention than controversy? However, Feenstra was both professional and considerate and he suggested we let things cool down before we approached the subject. Even still we only brushed on the cancellation, and instead looked at the broad spectrum of racing in Nova Scotia.

Ever forget you're a mountain biker?
By Nobalance
Late again. Yup, late again in the pursuit of spring and summer fitness I've, like an old crow, flitted from one shiny fitness idea to the next over the last few months. Dusted off an old pair of trail running shoes bought on clearance at MEC many moons ago and was at one point running four days a week. That died with a trip to Boston to support my wife in her first running of the Boston Marathon - crazy fast beauty ran 3:06 and change - of twenty-five plus thousand folks that drops her inside two thousand - Wow! I know.

A Message From ECMTB's Favorite Pro
East Coast Mountain Biking's favorite pro rider, Ryan Leech keeps an eye on our forums and the East Coast riding scene in general. He noted the the fierce conflict associated with wearing a helmet while riding and sent us a letter. Ryan rides for Norco, and we were treated with a few demo rides in the Maritimes last year. I had the chance to meet Ryan at Savage's Bike Shop in Fredericton and I can't say enough about the man. He spent time with every person who came for an autograph, and put on an A1 show to boot. Here is what he had to say, after admitting that it the helmet issue is a tricky one, but one he cares a lot about.

Event Organizers: Thank you!!!
By Konarider
This is not meant to scare away would be race / event organizers but rather to give those who have never participated on that side of the fence an insight into what's involved.
The Woolastook 5 provided me with an opportunity to work with Andrew and Chris on the organizing side of things. I've participated in maybe a dozen or so different events and never really took the time to realize what had to be done to successfully host an event or race. I offer you a quick overview of what's involved. I know I'm missing a few things.

Q & A with Andrew, Mark and Paul
By Replicator
I had a chance to catch up with three owners of Cyclesmith, Andrew Feenstra, Mark Beaver and Paul Shaw. I took the opportunity to pose a few questions to them in the hopes of them passing on some of their Yoda-like wisdom and insight. I wasn't dissappointed.
Replicator: Where do you see the biggest challenge in bringing more people to cycling?
Andrew Feenstra: Safe areas to ride, and education for automobile drivers.
Mark Beaver: Road conditions in Nova Scotia. Lack of shoulders on roads, narrow roads. Off-road, lack of mapping of routes and places to ride. Weather.
Paul Shaw: I see the biggest challenge is the same challenge our society faces with lifestyle changes. Many know they need to become more active, drop weight, eat better, move more, but aren't able to incorporate the needed changes into their life. With active living, come more cyclists (and walkers) who commute by bike and from that more people who ride for pleasure. I ride to work wearing street clothes on a bike with fenders. I don't need a shower when I get here if I commute at a leisurely pace. Getting on my bike is as easy as putting on my shoes. I want people to see cycling as easy, as another mode of transport, as a practical alternative. More commuters who are comfortable in traffic will lead to more riders of all stripes - in the woods and at the races.

The Oakley "You Wanted The Best- You Got The Best!" Spring Run-Down
By Vo2max
The other day I saw what is now one of my favorite pre-race psych-up movies: Detroit Rock City. Such pump-your-fist-in-the-air stoke is a pre-requisite for success in the saddle, and what better way to tell the world you run the 'hood than with the biggest, most aggressive glasses out there? I'm talking about the replacement for the old Oil Drum, ostensibly a true balla' shade in itself. However, this is Oakley we're talking about, a company that innovates more than Specialized, Cannondale, and Lockheed-Martin combined. Their cultural stethoscope dictated that the Oil Drum must be made larger, more aggressively wrapped, and most critically: composed of a single lens. The drum is gone, now we're talkin' 'bout the RIG.

DIY: Rim Truing
By VWCabrio82
Well I've heard a few people ask from time to time about rim truing, so I thought I would give a crash course in very basic truing. At this juncture I would like to say that I am fully aware that this is not even scratching the surface of the many points involved in truing a wheel, and there are much more appropriate tools, and skills. This is merely something to get the weekend warrior mobile on a Sunday afternoon. There is plenty of rim building and rim truing tutorials on the Internet, especially by the late Sheldon Brown. These are definitely worth looking up and reading if someone is wanting to further their skill in wheel building and truing.

Represent East Coast Mountain Biking in style with your very own jersey! East Coast Mountain Biking's community is one of the best kept secrets on the East Coast, what better way to advertise ourselves than to show the colors on our back when we ride and race.

Act quickly because once we get 12 of each we're placing the order! We can order more later once we get enough demand, but we want the first lot quickly so we'll have them early in the season.
